Express service for loading a submarine cable laying vessel

Storing the exact length of submarine power cables

Mission description:
Due to the lack of a reliable length measurement for charging and cutting to length from an exact specified submarine cable length, the operational command of the submarine cable displacement vessel decided to request an express service from ELOVIS.

The length measuring equipment available on board showed widely varying length measuring results with precursor cables. Now, before loading and cutting the important submarine cable piece which needed an exact length, the use of the existing measuring systems was too critical for the team and they decided to get professional help.

ELOVIS provided two complete portable measuring systems based on the µSPEED-PRO sensors. The equipment consisted of 2 tripods, 2 optical adjustment units, 2 sensor cables, 2 terminal boxes with power supplies and the USB adapter cables to connect the systems to a laptop. As an emergency backup, another measuring system with cable was carried along.

The two measuring systems were then set up in parallel so that redundancy was available for the one-time measuring process and also so that it was possible to react appropriately in the event of faults in the cable routing. The measuring systems were set up on land directly behind a truck-mounted crane with the cable tank extraction, because according to the loading team, the cable seemed to have the best guidance there.

At loading speeds of 2 m/min to 14 m/min, the entire loading process took a good 9 hours overnight.

Despite less than optimal cable routing, there was only a difference of 0.01 % between the two parallel ELOVIS systems, which corresponded to a deviation of 35 cm for a cable length of 3,500 m. The deviation from the previous measuring equipment was considerable and the company was very satisfied.

The deviation from the previous measuring equipment was considerable and they were very satisfied to have carried out the charging and cutting to length with a reliable measuring device. 2 hours after the end of loading, the ship set sail.

24 hours elapsed between the first mail with the service request and the start of the service call in the port of Amsterdam.
