The limits of the measuring wheel

Measuring wheel-based length measurement is inexpensive! Is that really true?

If the materials to be measured are neither particularly elastic nor particularly soft and vary only slightly in thickness and structure, wheel-based length measurement systems are a good choice.

However, this only applies to materials in ideal condition. In practice, there are uneven surfaces, holes, joints and seams that lead to singular measurement failures and things that cause dirt built up or wear of measuring wheels and thus to permanent measurement errors.

This is where a measuring wheel reaches its limits.

In the case of the submarine cables shown, each metre costs up to €1,000. The images (which were taken after only a few hours of operation) suggest that measuring wheels cannot be used to take accurate measurements here.
